At the turn of the century, the Academie Des Beaux Arts hosted a Salon in Paris where the most prestigious artists exhibited their work. In 1905 the commissioner of arts chose to devote Room VII to a group of young painters whose main characteristic was the use of vivid colors scattered over their canvases in spots and flat fields. The works were considered to be radical. The commissioner defended the Salon VII artists and declared, “We ought to have the freedom and desire to understand an absolutely new language.” Henri Matisse emerged from the room and then, five years later, another renegade, Pablo Picasso, emerged. Room VII became a symbol for new thought, new ideas, new direction.
